This painting is a scene of a farm shrouded in a thick fog. In the center of the composition is a large barn which stands in stark contrast to the muted tones of the foggy landscape, drawing the viewer's eye towards it. Front and center of the left of the barn, a 1942 John Deere tractor can be seen parked in the gate of a dilapidated barbed wire fence which adds to the sense of age and history present in the scene. The fog creates a sense of mystery and isolation, giving the impression that the farm is cut off from the rest of the world. The overall effect is one of timelessness, as if the scene could be from any era in the past century. This scene is from an actual place nearby in Texas which I photographed and subsequently painted a few decades ago.
I remember like it was yesterday... The little black box of PRANG watercolors I received at Christmas when I was seven started me on a lifelong love of drawing and painting. Rendering the images of every comic book character from Mickey Mouse to Superman and Little Lulu furthered my art education. Little Golden Books, "The Color Kittens," taught me the basics of mixing colors. Then a magical experience happened! At the Jefferson Theater in downtown Beaumont, Texas (where I was born and raised), I saw Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Eagerly I awaited each new release through the years: Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Lady and the Tramp. At 12, I started an art notebook and bought my first oil paints. At 14,...
